Dina Mavris presented to more than 200 audiologists across Australia and New Zealand at a Cochlear webinar on including remote care in day-to-day practice.
In May 2025, Dina Mavris, our Director of Audiology, Research & Relationships, was invited by Cochlear to present a webinar on the benefits of including remote care in day-to-day audiology practice.
More than 200 audiologists from across Australia and New Zealand joined online to hear how Hearing Implants Australia uses remote care to support implant recipients across NSW.
Remote care isn’t just for emergencies
Remote care works best when it’s part of routine care, not something saved for when a patient can’t come in. Built into everyday practice, it can save patients unnecessary travel, help clinicians resolve issues sooner, and keep people connected to their care between appointments.
Remote Assist and Remote Check: what’s the difference?
Cochlear offers two remote care tools, and they suit different situations.
Remote Assist is a live video appointment. The audiologist and patient connect in real time through the patient’s app, and the audiologist can review and adjust the sound processor during the session, much like a clinic appointment without the travel.
Remote Check is done in the patient’s own time. The patient completes a series of hearing and device checks at home through the app, and the results are sent to their audiologist to review. If something needs attention, the audiologist follows up. If everything looks good, the patient may not need to come in at all.
In short, Remote Assist is for when a patient needs an adjustment now. Remote Check is a convenient way to monitor progress and decide who needs to be seen.
How we use remote care at Hearing Implants Australia
For our patients in regional and rural NSW, remote care is part of every step:
- Phone troubleshooting for quick fixes
- Remote Assist or Remote Check to review and adjust devices from a distance
- Replacement parts or a loan processor sent by tracked express post when a device needs repair
- Regional clinic visits when a face-to-face appointment is needed
Supporting our colleagues
We’re passionate about sharing what we’ve learnt with the wider audiology community, so that more people with hearing implants can get great care close to home. Thank you to Cochlear for the invitation, and to everyone who joined the session.
